I am moving into my very first home in a few weeks. I would love to be able to start all over, but I have to keep the furniture I currently own, and work around that. I have a chocolate brown, microfiber couch, which I like, however I LOVE COLOR! I was thinking of using a shade of blue or green for my walls. But, not sure how light or dark I should go. My parents said blue and green are for bedrooms only! Are they right, or just old fashion? Any suggestions?

You can use any color you want. Your parents are a bit outdated.

If you truly love color and want blue or green for walls, split the difference and use both. Two walls each color? Stripes? One on walls and the other on the ceiling? Anything goes.

You can accent your room with accessories to match and reflect the colors you choose.

Congrats on your first home and have fun with it.

Put what you love on your walls! It's YOUR space! but make sure it goes!

Please read on:
Sorry, but tell your parents that blue and green are not just for the bedroom anymore. I understand where they are coming from. Their opinion is probably based from thinking that blue and bluish shades of green are soothing and that's condusive for sleeping and relaxing in your bedroom. BUT maybe the living room(family room) is where you want to feel relaxed!

Keep in mind that certain colors do evoke different moods.
So,
Think about what mood do you want to convey in your space? Do you want to feel energized? or soothed? warm and cozy? or Fresh and modern? high tech? you get the idea. and think about how different colors make you feel personally. cuz it's different for everyone.

Then go to a paint manufacturer's web site like Sherwin Williams, or Behr's, or go to the hardware/paint store and stand back and look at all the shades. Choose all the cards that your eye was immediately drawn to.
Tape the chips to the wall above your couch and some will stick out like a sore thumb. Eliminate those. Then live with the chips for a few days and eventually one will emerge the winner. It will just seam to blend into decor and it will make you feel happy when you look at it.

With a chocolate brown couch, a sage shade of green works well, also a powdery light blue/dk. brown combo is very popular now. A peachy shade of tan would look great too.

Another suggestion would be to go to a fabric store and find a print that catches your eye that has the color of your couch in it. Buy the smallest amount you can. Pick out one of the other colors in the fabric and paint your walls that color.
Sorry my answer is so long but I had alot to say and I wanted to help!

Good Luck and enjoy your new home!!

Go with some lighter colors on your walls but stay to an earth tone...i would suggest if you want color to use some accent colors like throw pillows and decor like candles and things. It makes sense that your parents would think that is just out of the question but think about it....whose home is it? Go with what you like there is a website called armstrong.com it allows you to see all colors of walls and textures. Good luck and have lots of fun.

I prefer green and blue for bedroom colors.
However, i've seen several non-old folk people with light blue walls in their bathrooms.

I would love to have blue walls in my bedroom.
I've got the wooden-paneling in here on 3 of my walls, and white on the other, so it looks kinda weird..
but my room's huge.

So i live in the basement just to get the biggest room.

I would go with a LIGHT color, of blue, white, or green.
It does make your room look bigger.

Your parents are very traditional..but you sound more liberated..so go for colors! Try this...Use pastel colors on walls & darker color for trims, like moldings,or woodwork.....that keeps the room looking larger...or you can go for a strong bold color on the walls & accent with a complimenting color...Like royal blue & green..making it look bold yet classy...your couch can accomodate any color combo. so have fun!

I went on SherwinWilliams.com to update the colors of my living room. It's a great site that gives you coordinating colors and even schemes for different rooms of your home. I think you'll find it will help you.

your parents are still retro aged to clash colors.. if you wanna keep a good color scheme you have to stay in the brown color scheme... you should probably just keep walls white.. but if you have to paint, then paint a light tan or nude color... for walls, the lighter the better for matching and for tempurature...

Go to Lowes or home Depot and use their color combination computer in the paint dept. Lots of options for combinations - really cool.
