Thumb sucking is a comfort thing. But I would try to stop it while you still can, because it CAN cause very costly dental problems. Perhaps putting something on his thumb that tastes really bad or something he doesn't like. Preferably something bitter. This may stop him.

depends on how old. under 1 yr? 1-2 yrs or older? try Control It! It is amazing stuff. It absorbs into the skin so thast no matter how much handwashing he does, it won't come off for a couple of days. It also helps heal the erosion of the skin from sucking. You can get it at natural foods stores (like Akin's). Here's the site:

It's very hard. My parents tried everything. the bad tasting stuff just got sucked off and they even plastered my hands together at night but i just took it off. I sucked my thumb for 21 years and only stopped cos i got train tracks and they threatened to make me pay for them.
I'd say because he is a boy he will grow out of it cos it's a "girly" thing to do

Children suck their thumbs for comfort, but mainly due to hunger. Believe it of not, children eat much more than we expect they do!

Give him a rusk stick or other food everytime he sucks on his thumb. Milk from a bottle if he is sleeping. You'll be surprise how big and healthy they will grow!
