In Paris I bought an oil cloth paint apron for my toddler that has Elmer the elephant on it... She wears it when we have "art time" together and it makes us both happy.

Where did you get something really special or unique?

I always try to get something that you can't get anywhere else. In Bermuda it was a photo of a Moongate, Holland - Delft tile, Malta - hand blown glass... You get the picture. Something that really embodies the place you were, handcrafted, the signature piece of the area.

I have a series of those T-shirts, you know the ones: "MY (fill in the blank) went to (fill in the blank) and all I got was this crummy T-shirt".

When I got the first one as a girl, I was sort of insulted, and I guess I acted out, because thereafter whenever ANYONE I knew went anywhere, they made sure to bring me one of those T-shirts. Now I have about 40 of them and I treasure them I have them in vacuum sealed plastic with a card saying who they are from and in the last 10 years, my family and friends have taken a picture of themselves buying the shirt and I put that in with it.

It is a fascinating history of the places my family and friends have gone. I have also gotten some other lovely souvenirs, but they are not as memorable as these silly shirts, which have gone way out beyond the original gift-givers, my parents, to distant cousins and friends of friends, who all want in on the joke.

Maybe I'll get written up in PEOPLE magazine someday, ya think?

When I went to Baffin Island for a tour of the "Land of the Midnight Sun"in what was the North West Territories of Canada (it has now changed names)....I purchased an Inuit sculpture by a local artisan.

It's on display in my living room and each day I look at it and remember how beautiful the North of Canada truly is.

For me the best souvenirs/gifts are those that were given to me by a local or someone I met while traveling.

The two that come to mind right now:

1. A "Sweden" army patch: I met this gorgeous swedish guy in Tel Aviv, Israel. He was in the Swedish army and had come from Beiruit. I was hanging around with him & a few of his friends. They were peacekeepers. I had a bad stomach ache from bad shrimp I ate earlier, and one of them ordered me this special drink from the bar, saying it was a special swedish concoction that would cure my stomach ache. It worked! Then later, i went on a romantic moonlit walk on the beach with the swedish guy, and he ripped the patch right off his jacket and gave it to me.

2. A Swiss friend I made in Switzerland bought me a little red swiss army knife while we were walking around in one of the cute little villages near Zurich.

Every time I go to a city with a Hard Rock Cafe I end up with a menu. I have them from Washington, DC... Chicago, Puerto Rico, Detroit, Toronto, and Bahrain. Does that count?

When visiting Smokey Mountain National Park (USA) there was a bear cub sitting on the sign. I snapped the picture and had it blown up. It was the best souvenir ever!!!

I brought handmade Chinese dresses for both my girls when I brought them home from China. Each are different and unique and made in their province.
I have them on display in their room, along with other items from China from their adoption trips.
