I thought I heard that you could but I want to make sure it doesn't hurt my cats. They never go in the attic but will the smell affect humans or other pets?

It will only hurt them if they are ingested. Rats or any other creature that is. Go and get some snap traps for rats and put some peanut butter on it. This is the best way to get rid of them. If you try and poison them, they will most likely die up there or in your walls and cause a big stink. Rats are awful pests so try and find their enrty point as well and block it so they will be forced to eat the paenut butter on the trap and there you go, no more rats.

Mothballs And Rats

Hi there again Janet...http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/ope/enotes/showarticle.cfm?id=89
MOTHBALLS are toxic to cats which contains the ingredient Naphthalene. Mothballs are approximately twice as toxic as paradichlorobenzene, and cats are especially sensitive to naphthalene. Signs of ingestion of naphthalene mothballs include emesis, weakness, lethargy, brown-colored mucous membranes and collapses. Paradichlorobenzene mothballs may cause GI upset, ataxia, disorientation, and depression. Elevations in liver serum biochemical values may occur within 72 hours of indigestion.

Rat/Mouse traps are ideally the safest method since you have kitties.

EDIT: I just recalled that many people suggest another safe way to deal with rodents is to use carbonated Coca-Cola. It proportedly works because they are unable to burp or vomit therefore becoming bloated and die. However, I don't know if this a valid suggestion. Here are a couple weblinks on other naturally safe ways to exterminate rodents:

I use them as a deterrent and yes, they are harmful to humans and cats. Even the odor / fumes are dangerous. Use very sporadically. Rat traps would be best, though. Or call an exterminator.

I've never heard of mothballs affecting rats. Let your cats up there. They'll take care of the rats.

Mothballs will not hurt your cats or humans. I would try a bait that does not have a risk of secondary poisoning.

If you have a sturdy slingshot and have excellent aim -- and if you have lots of patience -- mothballs will do the job very nicely!!
