Our dog's regular diet is confined to dog food, but for training we like to use people food. Does anyone know where I can find a list of foods that are bad for dogs? I don't want to feed him anything that will hurt him. (P.S. I know chocolate is bad.)

I know that chocolate, fatty meat, and ceertain fruits are unhealthy for a dog.

Here is a list of foods that are harmful for your dog:
1. Avocados
2. Chocolate
3. Coffee (all forms)
4. Onions and onion powder
5. Garlic
6. Grapes
7. Raisins
8. Macadamia nuts
9. Alcoholic beverages
10. Moldy/spoiled foods
11. Salt
12. Fatty foods
13. Xylitol (gum, candies or other foods sweetened with)
14.Tea Leaves
15. Raw yeast dough

You don't necessarily need to use food as a reward. It could also be a favorite ball or toy. But there are some very good "high value" treats at the pet food store. You need to find the one treat that motivates your dog the most and stick with that one. Use it only for training purposes and only when your dog has done exactly what you want. Good luck with the training!

Caffeine's bad for dogs. Like chocolate, they can't metabolize it.

As far as in general, just making educated guesses, I would think spicy foods, or foods with a lot of seasoning or herbs would irritate their digestive system. Stuff that we would call junk food for us is probably best to stay away from. Meats that have a lot of salt, like hot dogs, ham, and bacon have a lot of salt in them.

I only give my dog foods, usually meat that is as natural as possible and not overly seasoned. A deboned baked chicken leg is much better for them than a chicken nugget.
