We have a lot of bird feeders and apparently have attracted a hawk. He has killed a bird in the yard and now he is scaring off all the other birds. What can I do to get rid of him whithout all the other birds leaving. I would like to but know I cannot kill him, protected.

If you really want to discourage the hawk, stop filling your feeders for about a week. The birds will find other feeders in the interim, and the hawk will look for better hunting grounds.

But on the other hand, take a good look at the hawk. Isn't it astonishingly beautiful and powerful when it zooms through your yard? Being a predator isn't an easy way to make a living, and the hawk has to work hard and often goes hungry. They aren't wanton killers; in fact, most young hawks die of starvation before they are 1-year-olds.

The little birds at your feeders are very wary and keep a sharp eye out for hawks, so that the little ones that are caught are the weak ones - too sick or too stupid to get away. In that way the hawk keeps the population tuned up. It isn't pretty, but brace yourself and enjoy the hawk for the magnificent creature it is.

The hawk is a top preditor in the bird world and it is just doing the job for which it is intended. The hawk will cull the weak and sick and will improve the situation for the strong and healthy.
Your bird feeder is meant to bring wildlife to your yard so you can watch what they do and this is exactly what you are seeing. This is nature and you need to observe and not interfere.

the easy way is to put up a fake crow or owl the crow and the cooper hawk,s don't get along and if you see the cooper coming bang some thing loud and it will scare it away but the crow next to your feeder should work the best they also sell a round mirror the cooper,s dont like to move into anothers aera you can put that up by the feeder
