At school we have this retarded teacher.. Well anyways she gave our class a project to do, "Design a toy boat to sink in exactly 60 seconds."
Tomorrow: Monday, October 9th is when we have to turn in the design.... And Wednesday, October the 11th we have to present it to the class and show that our design works... But since I'm working alone... I would really appreciate some help...
Thanx..

Steps
1) Take a big vessel with measured amount of water
2) Make a metal boat with a small hole and let it sink. The hole should be such that the boat should sink in more than 60 sec
3) Note the time
4) Increase the hole size slightly
5) Keep repeating steps 3 & 4 till u hit 60 sec.

Note: Do not change the vessel or water amount or the actual boat. The thing will work if they are constant. Let me know for any issues.

If it's a toy you want it to sink dramatically! I think I would use a small geared down battery operated motor to drive a fine threaded screw which would move a plug from below the water line at the stern , slowly up the length of the boat until after about 55seconds it pushes a plug in the deck, near the bow, out. If you put a piece of sponge on the last bit of travel you can have bubbles coming up even after your boat has sunk. Can probably have the screw set off caps or non-safety match heads too.

Best of Luck - It sounds like fun.

If you don't have to show any calculations for your design, you could just use trial and error.
Drill a hole in the bottom of the boat. Then add small weights to the boat. For every weight you add, the boat will sink faster. Just try to see how much weight you need.

All you need to do is to produce a boat with a hole in it big enough to let in water so that the boat will sink in exactly 60 seconds.

here is the answer,
Ask your teacher to mention the ocean that exactly makes a toy boat sink in 60 seconds!
good luck

Buy a toy boat and various size drill bits. Drill increasingly larger holes, and varying number of small holes until it sinks in the allotted time. Record the amount of time for each combination and size of holes.

you should make a boat that has a small hole in its floor and the water will rise through it into the boat
then you have to account for by taking observations that in how much time how much amount(weight) of water fills...then the task is easy just just make a toy boat that has a similar sized hole in its floor and will get filled to its neck just at the sixty th second

volume of boat required = water penetrated into boat in 60 s(from observations in grams) x density of water used

for simplicity of task use distilled water as its density is 1gm/cc
