I need some advice! I have been dying my hair black for a few years now. I want to go and have a full head of highlights done but am terrified that it will damage my hair. My hair is just past my shoulders and really strong and healthy....Am I taking a chance?

I only dye my roots every six weeks and it has been about a year since they pulled the coulour all the way through. I dont use "nox" colour, always have a stylist do it.

You should never go from black to blonde (even if it's not the entire head) all at once. Do this - tell your stylist you would like to transition from all black to black w/highlights or brown w/highlights. If you want black hair w/highlights, ask for wide panels of brown highlights in your hair. This will add dimension to your hair and lift the shade as well. If you truly want brown hair with highlights, the stylist will possibly recommend doing this in 2 steps. First getting the hair from black to brown with causing the least amount of damage. Then a few weeks later when the hair has somewhat recovered, he/she could go in and do highlights a that time.

You're always taking a chance messing with color on your hair. If you talk to your stylist and try not to do everything at once, you'll have a good chance of still having (at least semi) healthy hair.

If you've been having a stylist do it and your hair is very healthy now, it should be okay. My best friend has long brown (dyed--because she has a lot of gray) hair. Every summer I'll scatter highlights all-over to lighten her up and in the fall she goes all brown again. Her hair is healthy because I use the right dyes and highlights AND I keep her trimmed regularly (that's the biggie). See if your stylist uses a highlighting creme that doesn't need heat to process. Most highlighting creme needs heat and that can be more damaging than the ones that do not require it. Good luck!

It depends on how you have been applying the color and what kind of color you have been using. If you have been putting it all through your hair every single time, there is a chance that your ends will not lift lighter. They will have to use bleach on your hair no matter what ,which compromises the hair anyway. If you have used Feria(sp) they will most likely not do it because it contains fabric dye. When they put bleach over that, your hair will look like cotton candy. it is best that you are honest with the stylist and tell them everything that you have done to your hair. If you do not tell them then there are always risks to severe hair damage.

As long as ur getting it professionally done u will be ok, ur stylist will be able to give u tips on how to maintain the color and to keep it healthy. Any chemical services including the black color you have been applying is damaging to the hair. Keep it trimmed regularly, use a good shampoo and conditioner, and apply a reconstructer pack once a week to keep the strength built up.

Any time you change the color of your hair, you are taking a risk...Because you are putting chemicals in your hair.

I have changed mine several times, and have not had a problem...But I go to a stylist who specializes in Color Correction. I haven't had any breakage at all.

DO NOT attempt this on your own unless you are a licensed Cosmotologist. Extreme color changes are best left to the professionals.

I know this because a friend of mine had colored black hair, and decided to go blonde using home haircolor...Not only did the color come out an ugly orange color...But she lost several inches of her hair!!!

You do not want this happening to you...So to be safe, go see a stylist for the initial color change...And later you can do the touchups on your own at home.

Good Luck!

After I read your story and not just the question: I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE NOT A GIRL WITH BACK HAIR!!!

I've had black hair as well, and I've put highlights in my hair. What the hairdresser done with me is, they didn't make it blond blond blond if you know what I mean, every time I went back, it got lighter and lighter, so today I'm a Blondy and my hair is healthy!!!

well, I dont think that you should put highlights in it. my mom put highlights recently in her hair and at one point, her hair was falling out. A LOT.

To sum it up, I say dont do it. Or you shouldn't have dyed your hair black in the first place.

well, no matter what, you've damaged your hair by coloring it. my mom is a stylist, and no matter what you cant dy it (hypathetically) blonde the way ashlee simpson did. it will turn out orange. i would start by dying it a dark brownish color then going lighter. hope it helps.
