The definitive answer:

a) Cost. Batteries add directly to the shelf price of an item. Without batteries, a good appears cheaper.
b) Batteries contain corrosive materials. Failure of an inexpensive battery could ruin the expensive article it's packaged with.
c) Batteries are time-dated. They have a finite shelf-life after which the article they are supposed to power will not appear to work properly, or at all.
d) Batteries are heavy. They add to the weight of an item thereby increasing shipping costs, and the shelf price of the item itself.
e) Logistics. Including batteries with an item means another step in the supply chain, increasing manufacturing costs.
f) Packaging. If batteries are not put inside the item, they must be packaged along with it. Packaging must be designed to accommodate it. Packaging is a factor in cost, and costs are a function of shelf price.
f) Liability. Something else that can go wrong. Insurance and litigation are time-consuming and expensive. Having the buyer supply their own batteries passes financial and performance risk to others.

Hope this helps.

There are many reasons for No Batteries included.. i think the main 3 are:

1: Shelf life of product... Leaky batteries....
2: Keep batteries away from children, easy for child to eat/swallow battery...
3: Reasoning by manufacturer.. "if you want to pay £100 for our bit of £20 plastic, then you can afford the batteries too" !!

It's all about shelf life. Batteries can go bad. If they are left in the toy, one bad, corroded battery can ruin the toy. If batteries are packaged with the toy, one corroded battery would greatly lessen the resale value. Toys are generally manufactured and packaged long before they appear on shelves. Purchase fresh batteries appropriate for the toy and include them with the gift. One thing worse than not having batteries is having corroded batteries or a ruined toy.

Safety and money.

Batteries do have a shelf life, if the product included the batteries, then it would have a shelf life too. Companies are not about to take on that cost. And since they wouldn't, we would. It best all round.

If you know you have to buy batteries when you buy a product, at least you know you have fresh batteries.

The toy may be stuck on the shelf for many months, and the batteries may leak during that time, thus ruining the toy and also the chance of a small child getting battery acid on them..that is why there are no batteries supplied

#1 it costs the toy manufacturer more to produce when they include batteries #2 Then it has a shelf life so to say the batteries will only be good for so long.

It could be more for safety. If, the product were to stay on the shelf for a long period of time the Batteries may "Leak" and cause a fire hazard or damage to the product. They not have to be installed. This all I can think it would be.

It is because the manufacturers are money grabbing bastards and are too tight to supply them. And if they do they are usually the crappy ones made in Taiwan that are nearly flat or have leaked.
