From what you say, you received an immigrant visa. It means you are expected to move to, live, and work in the US. While you can travel back and forth, you should be aware that not establishing a domicile in the US promptly can seriously affect your US residency. Which visa did they grant?
Usually it means that you need to "enter" within that period. It shows commitment. Usually you don't need to stay indefinitely. But I think there's a minimum period you need to stay, like two weeks or 3 months or something.
Work visa's have different requirements and exemptions. I had a tourist visa once that allowed a period in the middle for work - it was weird, and a special case. Maybe your case applies?
Best bet is to check with your local embassy. They'll tell you all the specifics of your visa requirements, and can put it into a language you understand. Nothing worse than getting it wrong because you had a bad interpreter. Been there, done that.

--->Go to your embassy<---

Generally if you're honest and upfront you won't encounter any trouble. Yor local government may offer "safe travel" information. Which *never* goes astray. Better to be too cautious than not cautious enough.
Good luck.

Get into the U.S. before your time runs out! If, you want to go back and work, go! Do not go around telling everyone and no one should know!! Then it not matter. You should be able to come and go using your VISA. That my opinion.
