I had some frozen chicken thighs, and had just put them in a pan, covered with foil, and put them in the oven. I had not turned on the oven yet, I got a phone call because my mom had fallen and split her head open. I got home 14 hours later, is it still safe to bake? or not?

Personally, I would not cook it. Once chicken thaws, it's not good for more than a couple of hours before it starts to deteriorate, and if you have a pilot light going in the oven, that would just speed up the process. Better safe than sorry for $3-4 worth of food.

Chicken that has been in this condition for more than a hour or so will start to develop Salmonella. These are particularly nasty bacteria and make the recent E Coli sickness look tame. I would highly recommend that you toss the chicken rather than cook it.

Any exposure to temperatures between 40-140 degrees allows the Salmonella bacteria to grow.

The chicken is not safe to eat. Throw it away.

2 hours is tops.

Never let raw meat, poultry, eggs, cooked food or cut fresh fruits or vegetables sit at room temperature more than two hours before putting them in the refrigerator or freezer (one hour when the temperature is above 90°F).
