I was in a car accident where i rear ended the other driver. We exchanged information but they said everything was fine and not to worry they didnt appear to have any damage but i had cracked my radiator. They left the scene and within the hour, they reported the accident with a state patrolman and they've been calling my house and cell phone. I have been driving for 6 months and have a clean record. What will happen next with the cops and the other car and how will this affect my insurance rate?

Well, unfortunately you are at fault. You need to report it to your insurance company. They will contact the other person and arrange an appraisal of the damages and pay for them. If they are injured and entitled to a bodily injury claim, they will handle that too. If you carry collision coverage your damages will be covered less your deductible.

Your policy may be affected due to this at-fault loss. How depends on a lot of things, such as your history of claims, how much was paid for this one, and if you already have a claims free bonus. You may get accident forgiveness, or lose a discount or get a surcharge, which will stay with you for 3-5 years.

Nothing should happen with the cops. if you get a ticket, you have to decide to go to court or pay it.

It seems like you will be found at fault in the accident, which will affect your insurance rate. It is difficult to say exactly how much, that is something only your agent can tell you, but it is usually about a 40% surcharge that will be charged for the next 3 years. You didn't do anything wrong by exchanging your information, but in the future, you should call the police to come to the scene. The police aren't there to determine fault, they just come out and take statements from the involved parties, take any witness statements, and will write a report. The only bad part is sometimes they write the at-fault party a ticket for maybe following too close or speeding, or something along those lines. The other driver may be calling you because they wanted to get more information or tell you the progress on their claim. The cop may be calling to get your statement on the accident. You should contact your insurance company and advise them of your accident, and they will typically take over calling the other driver's insurance company and dealing with the adjusters. The cop is only looking to complete his report and needs your statement.

You need to report this to your ins. company AT ONCE. Something is beginning to smell about this...everything is fine yet they are calling you, (or is the State Patrol that is calling..you didn't say which..). You probably want to report this to the cops anyway just in case this is rolling into a scam situation (and for God's sake, always call the cops at the scene of an accident. This will help protect you.) I wouldn't advise having any conversation with the other party except to tell them you have reported the accident and if they have any questions they should call them or wait for your company to get in touch.

If you rear-ended them, you will be held responsible. It would have been better to have the patrolman come to the scene of the accident. Sounds like they are going to throw the book at you because you are a new driver. I'm really sorry this happend to you...talk to your insurance agent and see what he/she has to say about it.

Just call them back. They just need to make a report and everything will be fine.

Your insurance rate will go up typically based on the $ amt paid out. It sounds like a small claim. It is an at fault loss and may increase at renewal.

you have to report it to your insurance company
even if they say don't worry it needs to be reported
you only give them your insurance info
if they keep calling you tell them to call your insurance agent
they shouldn't keep calling you
you need to call their insurance agent to
so you can tell that insurance agent what's going on
you needed to call the police when the accident first happened
sounds to me that they probably don't have insurance &
gave you some bogus or expired insurance card
follow up on it & see where it takes you
