use a nail file, it makes them grow stronger, cutting them isn't always the best option.

do one thing , offer him some thing he likes the most and tell him that u will give it if the nail is been cutted.

I don't see the problem. He will eventually get bored and get rid. Your friend making it a battle is feeding her sons interest.

I had that with my daughter, she used to go crazy and scream the house down at one point I pinned her down to do it.............then I discovered the best way. you do it in their sleep, yes it works, just be ever so gentle.
