It is a photo model and I know how expensive they are, He has already put his own music and photos on it! I cant believe he did'nt try to return it to it's owner, it would'nt be difficult as it was found on public transport so the owner will probably ring the company up to see if 1 was found. I think this is really deceptive of him or am I too conscientious? This was probably a gift from somones hard earned cash. I think it's like stealing.

Firstly he's not exactly my friend he is just one of the 6 people that share this house, we all have keys to our own rooms by the way, secondly he got the cables off his sister who used to have an ipod but broke it and never replaced it. The answers are great so far!

Your house mate has a serious lack of integrity. I'd be careful of what I leave laying around the house if I were you.
As for the ipod, he could easily have contacted both the transit company and the police and said he's found this item, and leave his contact details. The police would likely say that if it hasn't been claimed after 30 days, the finder is entitled to keep it. But for your chum not to even make an effort earns him a place in the Hall of Shame.
I do believe that what goes around comes around ... he can still do the right thing, or risk the consequences of fate.

I'd like to say I would try to find the owner, but in reality I don;t think I would. As everyone else is saying, finders keepers losers weepers, but that really does sound juvenile doesn;t it? it is like stealing, but unfortunately very little you can do about it, unless you want to call the public transport company and ask if anyone has reported it lost, then give your info. It would put him on the spot and probably ruin your friendship. You would have to decide which is more important to you. I would just let him keep it.

He should have handed it in to the police, Chances are that after a month he would have been informed that it was his as no one claimed it.
Did he have an Ipod already , As I dont know anyone that carries there Ipod around with the right wires to connect it to a computer. Sounds like he nicked it from a shop.

Sometimes, in the Metro paper, in the letters page (i dont know how much banter there is in the English editions) but sometimes, if something is lost or found someone writes in, saying "i found an ipod, if u contact me and can name the albums on it..." u get the idea, it should be returned or at least reported, if i lost my sony mp3, id b gutted.
Ur house m8 shud do the decent thing, hand it in, or at least report it found, u never know, he might get it back if its not claimed, or might get a reward!!
also, im curious on how he transferred his stuff onto it, he'd need the ipod software.....

Definitely he should try to return it. Let the bus people know he has it, turn it into the police, etc etc ... I wonder how he would feel if he lost something valuable and the person who found it just kept it. It's stealing.

Well.... he is going with the "finders-keepers losers-weepers" metality... very immature. However, karma has a funny way of biting someone in the *** and it will only be a matter of time before he loses something that is dear to him and it is lost forever. I dont know about stealing, but it certainly says alot about your roomies moral and values (that they arent there)

In the UK finding something of that nature with a good chance of it being reunited with the owner is what is known as "Theft by Finding" I have seen a magistrates court convict someone for it.
Next time your friend suffers a bit of bad luck....explain the concept of Karma to them.

He should at least try by reporting it to police. If no-one comes forward in 6 months the i-pod will be his anyway.
