well, black really isnt a shade but is used for most shades. It is actually a color that can be made from all the other colors like orange, blue, red, yellow, purple, and then all there combinations. But black truly isnt a shade but lots of people believe it is, so yes i guess you can consider it as a shade since it is used in most shades.

It is both. It is a color, because that's what is made up of, all the other colors. And it's a shade because it's a shade of grey.

I think that to be classed as a coulour, it has to be part of the spectrum, which black isn't of course. Black, grey and white are all shade.
