Some bakery departments in grocery stores will sell half loaves of their bakery fresh bread. If you don't see it on their shelves, you can ask them to break apart a loaf for you. The store/company I work at does this. It never hurts to ask to ask! Otherwise, you can always freeze the other half too!

I don't understand the bakery's problem. My dad is in the same situation and they have no problem cutting a loaf of bread in half and putting it in the slicing machine for him ...
I guess it depends on which area you live. May be it would be a good idea to do a survey in your area and present the results to the local bakeries?

If your dad lives in the UK then quite a few supermarkets sell half loaves precisely for the reason you describe. An alternative proposal is to select a small loaf and get the bakery section to slice it for him.

????
Isn't that possible in the States ? (guess you're from the states...) Strange...
All bakery bread in the Netherlands can be bought in halves, as long as I can remember (I must have been about 5 when I bought my first half bread, more than 40 years ago)

Keep half of the bread out then put the other half in the freezer.
