rinse with peroxide. In the meantime, shop around for a dentist that is pain free. When I went to the dentist yesterday, he is so pain free he gave me a shot in my mouth while I was talking to him. A good dentist is hard to find. I was afraid, too when I was a child, I actually hid under the bed, and my dad would have to pull me out from there. The dentist they took me to was an army doctor, I even bit him, and he slapped me! My took my kids & they are all grown up now, & today they still don't have one caviety, as this dentist used sealants which prevented any. Don't be afraid, it is childish.

i recently had a similar problem. i had not been to the dentist in over 7 years because i was so afraid, for no reason, never really had a bad experience there, just scared. i woke one morning and when i brushed my teeth i thought i had a piece of food stuck between 2 of them. i finally went to the dentist and it turned out that a part of the tooth had broken off because the cavity was so bad. they sent me for a second opinion for a possible root canal. turned out i just needed a filling. i was PETRIFIED!! my new dentist promised it wouldn't hurt, he would give me a lot of Novocaine. i was so scared i was sweating and white as a ghost and literally shaking. in the end it actually didn't hurt at all. took about 6 hours for the Novocaine to wear off. i am so glad i went now. i had six cavities and even had one filled without any Novocaine. you need to ask around to find a good gentle dentist. you can overcome your fear, i did. good luck, i hope you get up the courage to go.

This is an infection. You need to take care of it, one way or another or you can DIE. The infection could spread to your blood, which then takes the infection to your heart, your brain, and any other part of your body. Even if you just go to your physician, they can give you a prescription for antibiotic pills, and a regimen to clean your mouth.
