My whole relationship started with me asking him to give me a hug.... 10 yrs later and we're happily married with 2 little ones :)

I think that it is better to ask if he would like a hug which doesn't put him in the position of initiating and gives him the option to say no thanks. You don't want to create a awkward situation for someone who is not a hugger.
