my sister in law has two canaries & all they do is sit in the cage, tweet a little . fly a little & make a mess. They are
a bit boring & you have to vacuum up after the seeds
every day, a hamster or guinea pig might be better.

Your Q is eligible to a lot of answers. So, here is mine.
Your daughter is mature enough to receive a "live" toy. If she likes animals she will enjoy it more than anything else and it will help her to grow up more responsible and mentally healthy.
More responsible because she will realize that she is not alone anymore, she has to take care to the little bird. Teach her how to do but not wait from her to do everything or to do it every day...from my experience, she will not. You will...
When I travel, I always take them with me. It is easier when you travel by car or train or bus or ship, to take them with you and they are well accepted in most hotels; better than other animals.
I found a difficulty last summer in the airport when they have refused to accept the cage. Then they have passed the cage through the control macchine (the rays) and as a result, the bird died a day ago.
To avoid a similar situation, get informed before travelling by airplane with the bird.
As a conclusion, what would I recommend?
Take the canary to your daughter and make a page in your blog to say about your experience!

properly, whilst my daughter replaced into youthful she have been given right into some female fights some cases and that i assume this is only component to becoming up. in spite of the fact that, the different little women have been around my daughters age and the 'fights' in many cases have been no extra desirable than a sprint shove or push, grabbing each and every others toys, etc. You style of assume this from 3, 4 or 5 12 months previous young ones...in no way from a 11 12 months previous slapping an 8 12 months previous. you have each and every stunning to be mad and in touch. Your son is a good-looking youthful dude and there'll be female crushes on him. And youthful girls can get embarrassed definitely. yet there is not any excuse for embarrassment having actual violence as a effect. i definitely do not understand what to point to you if the girl's mom isn't returning your call. What i might do is strongly inspire (if not tension) the girl's mothers and fathers to have her circulate to a pair style of anger administration counseling with a specialist. EDIT: The 11 12 months previous female who slapped your daughter of course knew stunning in a while what she did replaced into incorrect. She in all possibility would have made issues much less annoying if she at once apologized for her in large condition of anger. as a exchange, she tried to conceal it up. regrettably, this may be a mirrored image on her mothers and fathers and how she has been raised so a strategies. if so, the two the mummy or the two mothers and fathers will attempt to play the finished element down as a exchange of accepting usual jobs. If this occurs your purely recourse may be to checklist it to newborn Welfare.

Personally, I don't like the idea of giving a pet as a present. Why, because you are giving a present of work and responsibility (and at 8 yrs old this could easily become your work and responsibility) and a present that could die shortly after if you do any of a long list of do not do's, as many of the above have already mentioned, they are not very hardy birds.
If you are set on getting her a bird, a male parakeet is a good choice because they are fairly easy to train, good interactive birds, hardy, and don't bite as hard as the females do usually.
Good Luck!

birds are very messy pets. canary's are pretty but only the male sings. the female just kind of hangs out would be pretty boring for a 8yr old. if she wants a bird i would suggest a parakeet, they can learn to talk a little, whistle and are playful. they can be taught to sit on your child's hand shoulder, and some can be taught to play simple games.

there are a lot of pro's...but I'll provide some con's
CONS:
-Birds require a lot of time and attention, more than many other pets.
-You must maintain a very clean environment as birds can get sick very easily.
-You cannot use any teflon, candles, sprays/fragrances of any types...even a small exposure to the fumes can kill a bird.
-Birds can be noisy...if you don't want a noisy animal don't get a bird.
-You cannot leave a bird home alone while you go away on vacation...you will either need to board them, find someone to visit and care for them, or take them with.
-Birds will get seeds everywhere...you will be vacuuming a lot
-Birds can bite, and can bite hard if they want.

I agree with the person above. Make sure she understand that it is not a toy, it's a live animal. Other than the allergic reactions that could occur, I would say go for it if she really wants one. I think it's very good for a child to have a pet that is easy to care for. Just be careful.. if she starts liking the pet thing, get ready to get a dog soon!

Canaries are not only expensive (for the males, they are the ones that sing) but also very delicate as far as diseases. Your daughter must be very diligent on cleaning their cage. Not only the bottom, but the perches too. They tend to rub their faces on them. If they are cacked with....well....doo-doo it can cause infections. I loved my canaries, but they were definately less hardy and more maintenence than hardier birds like parakeets and finches. But there is no better voice than theirs. It can stop you in your tracks....

Pro -- pretty pets, nice and quiet; beautiful colors if you buy for color, beautiful songs if you buy a song-species; smart animals; low cost to maintain; at last, you'll find a use for all of the newspapers your family throws out
Con -- get ready to sweep seed off of the floor constantly; you'll have to get rid of all of your non-stick pans and check all of your heaters, irons, etc. for teflon, and then replace them, too; you'll go through hell finding a qualified avian vet; you'll start to collect newspaper in piles under the sink
