The Volvo Masters is the concluding official money event of the European Tour season, the equivalent of the Tour Championship on the PGA Tour. The event's official name between 2000 and 2003 was "Volvo Masters Andalucia", but returned to its original name of "Volvo Masters" in 2005. Andalucia is the region of Spain in which the tournament has always been held since it began in 1988. Except for a gap from 1997 to 2001, it has always been hosted by Valderrama Golf Club. The prize money for the inaugural event was £351,690, and by 2005, this had increased to €4,000,000. The field consists of the top 60 leading money winners on the European Tour. The Volvo Masters is held one week before the Tour Championship to allow golfers who are members of both the European and PGA Tours to participate. From 2005 an invitation will be issued to the previous winner even if he isn't in the top sixty.
