Because the woman who brings him the tuna soup is so devastatingly beautiful that he can't stand to be alive and know that she will never, ever be his and his alone. A couple of weeks later, the homicide squad finally makes the connection between dozens of unexplained male suicides and the devastatingly-beautiful server. She is quickly brought before a judge who issues a court order permanently banning her from working in the food-service industry. The judge then retires to his chambers and hangs himself, leaving a note explaining that he cannot possibly go on living after seeing the devastatingly-beautiful former waitress and knowing that she will never, ever be his and his alone. The restaurant continues to serve tuna soup (a soup that was, indeed, innocent all along, as a previous poster here surmised). The devastatingly-beautiful woman, weary of the death and misery she has left in her wake, opens a store that sells only jazz and classical CDs and is never seen by anyone again.
