I allowed the install on my other computer & although my copy of Windows was 100% genuine & legal I had a devil of a job getting this to be recognized & verified.

If it stops automatic updates, is it still possile to go to the Microsoft Update site & have it scan & allow any updates I choose from there?
PS..they can take legal proceedings if they wish because they would have to take Dell to court aswell because it is their factory pre-installed Windows on my laptop.

Get a Windows XP SP2 OEM disk or slipstream one SP2.
Then you'll have no problems and cheap to get on ebay.
If you do have a problem, phone M$ and they reactivate it.
Just make sure get the sticker and ideally is sealed.

WGA has two components: Notifications and Validation.

You can turn off almost all nagging by removing Notifications and still leave Automatic Updates turned on and you will then get critical updates only.

In this case you will not be able to use the Windows Update website to auto-check your computer's patch status. You will also be prevented from manually downloading the updates.

Nor will you be able to download what Microsoft has deemed to be a marketing advantage to give away 'free'. Since this is how they have killed off a lot of middleware competition in the past - by 'bundling' (giving away) products just good enough to kill off competing middleware developers - I find it amusing they are now nullifying this policy in favour of anti-piracy. Left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing :) But I digress ...

Anyway you can diable WGA's Notifications component by simply running this tool:

Beware that at any time Microsoft may decide to deny critical updates to 'pirate' users and as for what's considered critical or not, that's completely the choice of Microsoft.

According to analysis 42% of people who experienced problems with WGA and reported those problems to Microsoft public forums during a period were actually running Genuine Microsoft windows that's not just our opinion ether, those statistics were reported by the Redmond-approved Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic utility. So its not just cheep copy's that are having problems with there WGA from Microsoft. So all in all you are taking a chance that your Genuine copy could fail too,go and read Microsoft's page on this you will see many have problems with there validation.

The WGA is ONLY designed to bebefit Bill Gates and his thugs. Contrary to common belief you WILL be able to download ALL critical updates and patches even though you do not install the trojan horse that is the basis of WGA. 1 in 7 of the machines flagged turn out to be running a genuine operating system. You must remember that after installation the WGA contains a BOT that regularly reports to Microsoft when you are online. IN SHORT.....THE WGA IS A PIECE OF CRAP DESIGNED TO INTIMIDATE AND FRUSTRATE PEOPLE TO PAY BILL GATES MORE MONEY EVEN IF THEY HAVE A LEGIT SYSTEM

You are not alone. There is a very good article by Brian Livingston (windowssecrets.com) entitled Genuine Advantage is Microsoft spyware.

by not having it you cannot get all the updates , critical updates. pros are that they aren't accusing u of having an illegal copy of windows and wont try to bring legal action against you
