The idea is to have a server that controls the internet usage in a hotel. Each guest comes in and plugs his/her laptop to surf the web.

But we need to know how long the person was on so we can bill them.

Need something that will not require us to configure the guest's laptop.

So the software that will help us achieve this is what I am looking for.

Thanks

There aren't many DHCP servers available for windows freely. I'm sure there are probably a few but probably not very configurable.

Linux is much more suited as a DHCP server. It's design is by nature for security, networking and also home/office use. Windows isn't always upto the job.

I will give XP Pro credit where it's due though. It's the easiest windows system yet for networking etc (also inherently insecure but thats another issue).

You would need network monitoring software OR you would need to run a proxy server on the server machine.

Alternatively you may be better off hiring a programmer to custom design some software for you.
