Manchester airport or Ringway as it is known is owned by the councils making up the area of Greater Manchester. The site was chosen in 1934 as it was suitable for large aircrafts.

the Manchester airport is located in Londonderry NH, right on the Manchester NH border.

Coz if it was in Portsmouth, it would be silly calling it Manchester airport.

because it saves people going into the centre of manchester to get there.
the same reason that cardiff wales airport is in barry which is miles from cardiff

Like Topsy - it just grew from the very small Ringway to its present size. Could be close to maximum size now and perhaps they could develop Barton to take the overflow.

Yes i know what you mean i've always wondered why it is where it is. I believe it would've been better placed in or near Halifax it would be then easier to get to.
