It's a bit of a catch 22. XP 64 is obviously designed to use the 64 bit processor but there are less things out there to make use of it such as device drivers, which make the whole thing work with you peripherals (graphic cards, monitors, hard drives etc.).
I have stuck with the ordinary XP because a lot of my software and drivers simply do not exist for XP 64. Also, I wonder if Windows Vista will help any. It is obviously newer but it also requires tremendous power even for a basline machine.

Stick with XP Pro for now.

I was in the same situation as you. To answer your question, I'll explain how it works

Yes because the architecture of the x64 OS is designed with dual core and 64 bit processors in mind, this will help your computer load faster and perform better. However, that leads into a problem...

Which is incompatability. To get everything working with x64, you will need to get the 64 bit drivers and 64 program versions for everything you have on your computer basically. If you're a gamer, I wouldn't go with x64 since it is not compatiable with all games yet. If you want an overall faster OS and you just use it for basic stuff with some music and movies, get x64.

I would suggest Windows XP Professional. It is the best OS that window has out. We use it on our laptops. And our desk top. And have never had a problem with it. Most computer manufacturers recommend it.
