Does who we are attracted to depend upon what we have ourselves or is it natural? Can we control who we are attracted to?

Excellent question. Me and my friend had this conversation just a few days ago.

I think we do. The name of the game is to pass on our genes, naturally we'd like to choose the best mate to pass it on to with, but our brain will be programmed to aim abit 'lower' (sorry to use this word) if its difficult just for the sake of passing on your genes.

Conversely, if youre very attractive, you'd want someone attractive as well to pass your genes with, and not someone who'll wreck it up.

This is all generalized though.

Well, I don't think we can always control who we're attracted to but I think relationships have a better chance if the partners are well-suited to each other. Whether you want to call this being in the same league or on the same wavelength or just compatible. It may be romantic to think that opposites attract but the reality is that you need to have a lot in common for a relationship to last. I've had a few boyfriends who thought I was out of their league...& they were right. I'm with someone now who's like a male version of me. It's amazing to be with someone who's an equal (emotionally, intellectually, physically, spiritually.) Someone I can relate to on so many levels. Someone I respect & admire & who feels the same about me. My ex-boyfriend put me on a pedestal, which was nice, but not fair to him or to me. He was the sweetest guy but just not for me. A relationship should be balanced.

i think women especially, are attracted to status, powerful wealthy men, celebrities, etc. but these men are generally out of our league, how many of those women with men like that, would still find them attractive if they had nothing ? look at all those wealthy ugly men with gorgous women, do you think they would still be there if they had nothing ? I DONT THINK SO !

Apparently not. We go for people in the 'same league' as ourselves. Its a 'neandathol' thing, ensuring we get our man/woman, in order to get our best chance at procreating...

Yes I think we are. I think are brains tell us it won't work otherwise. I certainly know if I were to meet someone in a class/league above mine I wouldn't fit in with his life style.
