I have had around 4 abcesess in the past 4 months. I was going to have my tooth out but they had to give me more antibiotics, 4 days later i had my tooth out this was on the 29th sep.
My mouth still did not feel right but i had no pain from the abcess.
I had the cracked tooth removed by having injections in the gum.
When i was being injected my jaw had swollen the size of a small orange.
I was in so much pain the bleeding continued for 4 hours or so even though i had cotton wool in my mouth.
This was on the Friday, on the Tuesday i tried to contact my
dentist early but no reply to i went my GP because of the pain and the swelling.
He put me more antibiotics and ibuprofen for the pain i had another abcsess a tooth away from my extraction on my wisdom tooth.
So now i have to go back again monday the 9th to the dentist my jaw is still swollen i have been on these antibiotics now for 6 days surely the swelling should have gone by now my gum is still tender. What do you think ?

see your dentist again, theres a possibility that theres another infection...could he have extracted the wrong tooth?? perhaps it looked as though a different tooth was infected from the xray?? ususally theres not significant swelling after an extraction.

I had an ulcerated abscess under an impacted wisdom tooth, with a big benign lump behind that... through lack of money, being homeless and looking after my pregnant Ex, I put off going to the dentist for six months by brushing (painfully every day) and using Peroxyl mouthwash.... It kept the swelling and infection down very well.

I suggest you use these things, to keep any infection left from recuring, and accept, that things take time to heal. There's no Broadband speed answers in health... it takes time, and relaxation and wellbeing before you can get better. It took me over a month to get my teeth to close again properly after I fnally had surgery, the swelling is still there, and is permanant (Three yrs later) and is casuing me problems even after having my tonsils out last year to counter the problem.

I think people expect a bit too much from medicine, doctors do thier best, but they can not do magic. There is not a cure for everything, even simple things have no effective remedy.

I' not 'having a go' at you there, don't take it that way, I'm just sharing my opinion.

You poor thing! The antibiotics could be wrong, or they may not be getting in to the abscess very well. Do keep taking them and the ibuprofen (after food). Also use Corsadyl mouthwash (or an equivalent), because that will get more antiseptic into your gums. If you feel ill and have a high temp as well as in pain, get on the phone to NHS Direct, to find out where the emergency dental clinic is, or a GP walk-in clinic. But hopefully it is on the way to getting better.

I too suffered recurring tooth abscesses and the swelling seemed to last for ages. I didn't need to have the teeth removed but had an apisectomy to remove the tip of the root from the offending tooth. That did the trick and no problems since 1993. If you are suffering at the moment it might be worthwhile taking a look at NHS Direct on line for further info

Right pain control. You can mix different TYPES of pain killers to get the max effect but without poisoning yourself. E.g. you can mix ibruprofen and paracetamol because they have different active ingredients. Take special care to read the box 'cos you'll only be allowed to take so much of any drug within a 24 hour period.

If it was me, then I'd have had a few scotches as well!

The sort of pain you were likely to be in, I think you should have been given proper pain killers, not f*ck*ng headache tablets.

Oh yeah, NHS direct. Waste of time for dental problems. Also if you ever have to go to a&e for a problem like this, make sure you take someone who can drive with you, 'cos they wont give you tablets otherwise.

What was your dentist thinking when he pulled your tooth. He should have not pulled until ALL the infection from the abces was gone.you will probably need a full set of xrays done to determine where the abcess is coming from because you may have more than one.If it were me I would find another dentist!I hope you feel better.Ive been were you are and it was not an abcess it was calcium deposits that caused the infection.

I think you should seek some medical care. After being on the amount of antibiotic for that amount of time you are right the swelling should be down, if you let if continue it can become very dangerous it sounds like the infection needs to be drained. I would get it checked ASAP nothing to mess with.
