She had knee replacement surgery and can't walk for exercise. A car accident has also limited her ability to lift weight. She takes Celebrex, yet even that wouldn't be enough to mask pain she would endure from using a weight machine. What can she do?

Pilates was developed with patients who were paralyzed. Yoga is also very gentle and will increase her flexibilty. Water aerobics are also good since that takes away pressure from her joints.

I lost weight in the hospital while recovering from knee surgery (my 7th, 8th, and 9th.) I was unable to get out of bed at all and could do no exercise. I ate a bagle with cream cheese for breakfast. Lunch and dinner was big on vegetables with usually a pasta and meat casserole, a piece of fruit. and sometimes a light desert (small) and also either a small salad or soup. No butter, salt and not much in the way of fats. I am home now, still in bed and have continued to lose weight by eating only things I like but usually just two meals a day. and pretty much the same as the hospital diet. She might try going on medifast. It tastes good and I once losts 75 pounds on it but it is boring. Oh, also I have made a habit of spreading out my food and kind of snacking all day. I will save a dessert or an apple or whatever to eat sometimes in the middle of the night.another thing - have her go to a pain specialist who will work with her to find a pain med better than celebrex. so she can live a more active life without pain. My doctor has me on a pain patch with a small amount of vicodin for emergencies.

She can do aerobic movements while seated. Just do the arms to start, if that's all she can do.

Or use soup cans as light weights in each arm to build muscle. Sounds like she needs some serious rehab though, or she'll have lasting problems.
