I LOVE hamburgers. And each of those previous answers are awesome. It depends on my mood, what I want on my burger. Sometimes just Miracle Whip and salt and pepper. Sometimes, mustard and dill pickle. Sometimes pile on EVERYTHING. But I did try a new one last week that just rocked my world. Tyler Florence created some dishes for Applebees, and one of them is a burger. Mozzarella, pesto, finely chopped tomatoes, and lots of other yummy stuff. Do yourself a favor and find an Applebees. (No, they aren't paying me for this, but if they want to...)

I think fresh, sliced avocados make the best hamburger topping. Add swiss cheese and I am in heaven. Also, I prefer white hamburger buns without the sesame seeds.
I also like jalapeno jack cheese with mustard. Very spicy and very yummy.
Good luck with your opening.

Grilled onion and mushroom, top with swiss and bacon. Add an avocado.
Maybe I am the only one who likes that.

we had a place in our hometown that served a bean burger. on top of the regular garnishes , on top of the meat was a thin layer of refried beans and crushed fritos or doritos before the top was on.

Bread/bun, cheese, onions, tomato, pickle, lettuce, mayo, mustard, not necessarily in that order (except for bun/bread).
