Your lungs will improve when you quit smoking, but some damage may be permanent. If you have emphysema, it will not "get healthy" but will not progress like it does with continued smoking. Your risk for cancer will be increased over nonsmokers for quite a long time.
However, things get better in your respiratory system almost immediately when you quit. CIgarette smoke paralyzes the little cilia that sweep impurities out of the respiratory system, but the recover only one hour later. The carbon monoxide level in your blood will decrease and your pulse and blood pressure will tend to normalize.
There are tons of reasons to quit. Protecting your lungs is just one of them.

If you keep smoking, they'll get worse and worse. The damage will never get completely healed, but it won't be noticable. In about a year you won't feel anything, but they might be internally damaged slightly. They will improve though. And major props for quitting.

Your lungs are supposed to be regenerative organs, so depending on your general health, how long you have been smoking etc., they should be back to normal approximately 2 years later. Smokers have also been known to develop cancer within 5 years of giving up if its going to happen at all. That doesn't mean that you wont still have a chance of developing throat cancer later in life! Goodluck!
