I've never heard that. I eat them together all the time and I don't see any ill effects. They are used together in some Chinese cooking so perhaps it's a regional thing.

Sounds to me that it is a chinese medical (not that ancient though i might add) theory. Tomatoes are part of the nightshade family of which some plants are very poisenous and some diets exclude them as much as possible . Your source of this information may be founded on this principle.
Other commonly eaten nightshade plants are Potato, Eggplant, Tomato And a diet i can think of at the moment that excludes these foods is called Macrobiotics.
Also ,depends on your source of information, it could be an old wives tale because of the clash of colours. Ha who knows. Good luck

yes you can eat them together no problem
when making spaghetti sauce some people put some carrot in the tomato sauce to improve the flavor.
