Because of what happened this week at the school in Pennsylvania.

They'll move on to something else next week.

Most people embrace technology, rushing out to buy the very latest high tech gadget and so the idea of a group of people rejecting technology freaks ... The idea that people can actually follow the tenets of their religion rather than mere lip service is also 'weird' especially to Sunday-Only-Christians and High-Holiday-Jews. The Amish are qctually quite fascinating, one of the only groups to retain their cultural idenity amidst the noise of the 21st Century.

Peace....

For me, I'm interested in their basic way of life and how they can shun all technology. I met my husband on the computer (way before the internet was the WWW) and were I Amish, that wouldn't have happened. We take full advantage of cars, television, computers, digital media... and they don't own blowdryers.

It is curiosity at the simple life they lead and the closeness they have as a community that drives my interest.

Because they are so unlike us and that makes them interesting. I was interested in the Amish ever since I saw them when I was a kid.

I would call it more of a fascination. I personally find they way they live very peaceful and spiritual... but if i grew up in that lifestyle and heard there was a bigger world out there... i would be exploring it and loving the technical advances.

We're always trying to invent and create new things. It would be completely impossible for the world to stay so pure, when our instinct is better our current situation. We can't help it unfortunately, we just have to learn, and more importantly, teach and impact our children to respect each other and our planet. There's so much readily available to information to learn, that people are forgetting to educate and expect it just be known.

Because they are living proof that it is possible to exist in this life without cell phones and cars and tv's and etc. etc. etc. and still have a happy, fulfilling and meaningful life.

They're also interesting (and admirable!) for the strong focus they put on themselves and their communities...something that many of us "normal folk" fail to do to properly.

Additionally, they are very "real" with regards to their beliefs and devotion and faith in Christ. They act on what they preach; they're not in the least bit hypocritical which is a lot more than I can say about some Christians (and non-Christians, too).

I'm guessing for the same reason that every other post here is about Islam. Because it's the currently in the news and alot of people have to have something to ridicule at the expense of that group even if they didn't do anything to deserve that treatment or were wrongly accused.

They represent something that is so different from our "mainstream culture". It' s a sub-culture really. They traditionally live a very strictly religious life.... all while the mainstream is blurring lines everywhere to accommodate different ways of living and thinking.
It seems that strict religions all over the world are unwavering in their basis of belief and thinking. Some people find comfort in that. Some people find it intriguing simply because it is different from their own life...or can't imagine themselves leading that sort of life.

Honestly, I forgot all about those folks until that shooting happened. Last time I saw anything Amish was in the movie "Kingpin" (comedy).

Well for me I've always been curious about their lifestyle. My grandparents have a farm in the middle of nowhere and although they have plumbing, drive trucks, ect.., life is so much more laid back in the country and you learn to appreciate more. Like where your food comes from, because you grew it, milked it and raised it.

P.S. My heart and prayers go out to the families and community who lost those children.

I agree with myst. but not a 100%................. We all live by some morality, but recently in the news was a big tragedy! Some girls in a school were killed and others really injured! Very tragic to hear that some one would do something so cruel!
