When we ask God for forgiveness through Jesus, Jesus' payment on our behalf takes care of the payment for our sins. Once they are paid for on our behalf by Jesus, that's when God wipes the slate clean, so to speak. But we have to ask for forgiveness before He will forgive us.

God will not remember, or judge you for any forgiven sins, but the consequences of those sins are eternal.

You might be forgiven for murdering someone, but the effects of that sin will reverberate through human history, until the end of the age.

In a sense, we all pay for them.

Christ paid for those sins on the cross but you must accept what he did for you. Salvation is a free gift. You can accept it or reject it. If you reject it then what He did for you on the cross does you no good. You are still guilty of your sins from a legal standpoint.

You must be forgiven and come to the blood stained cross. When you have repented then your sins will be put in that sea.
