There are many ways to meditate, and so many different types/definitions of meditation... It depends on your goal. Are you trying to create a peaceful quiet mind? Are you trying to prepare for something? Mainly, you need to practice disciplining your mind. It tends to behave like a spoiled child, thinking whatever it wants whenever it wants.
Try to sit comfortably with your eyes closed.
Now try to just stop thinking about things. Let your mind be blank.
It is very difficult and it takes a lot of practice holding the peace in your mind. If you are overwhelmed by uncontrollable thoughts, hum a single note and focus on it. That is why you hear people chanting ommmmmm when they meditate. They are focusing their mind on a benign sound to deter active thought.
Do it for 1 minute, then next time do it for 2. Then 5 for a few days. Work your way up. Sometimes staring into a candle flame can help detract your consciousness away.
If you are trying to prepare for something, maybe a new job for example, then sit comfortably in a quiet place again. Don't think, just picture yourself doing that job well. Imagine in the most detail you can how you will perform your tasks. Project yourself into that visualization. Some may call this a visualization technique more than meditation, but some don't.
Then there is the form of meditation where someone is trying to discover something unknown. They quiet their mind, and allow thoughts to just flow in then out. Come and go. Acknowledge and send it off. This is not active train thinking. This is sitting back and observing thoughts as they occur, without any further analysis or debate on the subject. You will be amazed at what you can discover when doing this.

This is a good way to start learning to meditate.
Called the twenty-four second meditation involves picturing numbers made up of dots as shown on large digital displays. We commence by picturing the digits 24. When we can clearly visualise each dot which makes each of the two digits two and four, then we move to 23, and 22. The concentration on the dots helps to eliminate other thoughts from the mind, and with a little practice over a few days, we are able to move from 24 down through all the digits to 0. If another thought enters our mind during this process, then we must start again. This is why it takes a few days before we are able to succeed Once we can succeed, then we are achieving an alpha state of mind, which is relaxed, and free of the linear thought process. This is the state of mind required for deep meditation, which we discuss later.

You sit down in a quiet, semi-dark place, on a cushion or on a chair, or you can do it lying down, as long as your back is nice and straight. Then you just basically concentrate on your breath without forcing it. You can say: in - out - in - out - in - out and so on in your mind, or count before or after each breath to help you concentrate (count to ten and then start over - in the beginning, you will hardly reach 3, but you just start over every time you lose count, and don't get disappointend, it's pretty hard really). All sorts of thoughts will come by, you will want to follow one or several of them, but don't - just imagine your mind is you sitting in a street café and your thoughts are the people passing by - you notice them, but you don't follow them around or concentrate on one in particular.
You can start by doing this ten minutes at a time, and then longer as you feel you are progressing.
I would recommend you to read some book about meditation or attend meditation classes, so you don't get discouraged right away, because it's a lot harder then it sounds!

To learn how to really meditate correctly it takes years and lots of practise. However if you are just wanting to calm yourself than follow these steps:
1. choose a comfortable place with no noise or interruptions.
2. close your eyes and think of darkness, emptying your thoughts and simply thinking of the darkness.
3. breath in slowly, hold it, breath out slowly, hold it, continue this.
4. relax all your muscles moving from top to bottom.
And after about half an hour of this you should be refreshed and relaxed. Hope this helped

I cannot do that "No thinking!" thing. So during the rare times that I meditate I think on something like sitting by a stream and the sounds that the water makes over the stones, the wind blowing my hair lightly, etc. I don't think that's meditating, exactly, but it calms me down.

About five o'clock in the morning is the best time, sit quietly, close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing, and try not to think, OK? Just really put all of your concentration into breathing and nothing else, you don't have to breathe funny, just normally, but keep it up, maybe for about an hour. Try doing it at the same time everyday and after about a month you'll begin to understand. Give it time.

Choose a quiet place where you can`t be disturbed by anyone.
Position yourself comfortably either lying down or sitting.
Close your eyes and free your thoughts from clutter.
Then focus on the thoughts by repeating the words or in your mind.
You can also use music as a background

If you are having a hard time sleeping or meditating it might not be you but it might be the mattress that you are sleeping on. You might need a new one if the one you have is almost 15 yrs old

Its different for everybody. Find a comfortable spot and turn off the outside noises and distractions. Turn on some tunes if that helps and just let your mind wander.

Sit in a quiet place, close your eyes, listen to your breathing, relax, clear your mind. Takes practice but with guidance you eventually get there. It feels great when you get there!
