Whenever I get depressed, I resist going to a psychologist to get drugs. I think they are overpriced and have too many side effects.

I do take melatonin each night before bed, and when I start to feel down, I usually realize that I have had an unhealthy diet and a lack of exercise lately. I begin to drink more water, cut out the refined sugar, avoid MSG (which unfortunately is in almost everything canned or processed) and I start taking a short walk around the block about an hour before bedtime. Then I take a nice hot shower before bed and during the few minutes before I fall asleep, I meditate on all the things I should be thankful for in my life. Sometimes I really have to force it when I feel like nothing is going right, but believe me, just a little positive thinking does good things.

I also make a rule to not allow my thinking to spiral for at least a day. I think you know what I mean by spiraling thoughts. Take a break from "what if"s and "poor me"s for a day. You will manifest fewer negativities in your life just by taking a day off from your problems every once in a while.

One more thing - If I ever feel hopeless, I allow myself to reflect on some bad times during the past that are gone now. I got through it then. Whatever is bringing me down now cannot bring about the end of the world. All hard times pass and I come out a better stonger person because of it.

I have taken Paxil, which didn't work too well for me. I am currently taking Effexor XR and Trazodone. The Effexor by far has made the most difference for me. The trazodone has been helping me to sleep. I have also heard that Cymbalta is really good as it treats both the emotional & physical effects of depression. What medication you take & what works for you may not be the same as what works for someone else due to your own chemical make-up. I would talk to your Dr. about what might be best for you. It might actually take some switching around until you find the one that works for you! Good Luck!

there are several medications on the market currently to treat depression.

how effective it is depends on the person taking it-not all medications will work for everybody.

some medications have the reverse effect in people (especially teens), making them more depressed than they were to start with. others might interact with medication a person is already taking. if you have or think you might have depression-talk with your doctor-only he/she can go over your medical history and assess how severe your depression is to help determine which medication is best for you. i've personally tried prozac, lexapro, and zoloft and have found the zoloft to work best.

some meds out there are:
-wellbutrin
-lexapro
-cymbalta
-zoloft
-paxel
-celexa
-effexor

Check out www.crazymeds.org. It's a fantastic site for such questions.

As far as peronal experience goes, I was on Lexapro for 3 years and it did a FANTASTIC job, but it just up and quit working one day. Welbutrin XL works okay now.

I get depressed a lot too. I try to keep busy, very busy. I am working constantly. Workaholic, no time to worry about poor me.
It works for me if it doesn't I take on a new project.
Try to stay motivated;
don't waste time in your youth sulking. Work hard for what you want.

I do not know if it is new or not, but my doctor put me on Pexeva for anxiety and I had horrible side effects from it. I would steer clear of that one, but everybody has different tolerance levels, so you may be able to handle that one.
