I would *not* recommend Norton. Most initial virus outbreaks are targeted to get around things like Norton/McAfee/etc because they are most widely used. It's also a horribly bulky program that takes up vast amounts of your computer's resources. Those who are recommending it probably have never used anything else. Grisoft's AVG ( www.grisoft.com ) is free and is very good. You can upgrade it if you choose. Panda ( www.pandasoftware.com ) also makes very good antivirus software.
Spybot Search and Destroy or Lavasoft's Adaware are also must-have programs for keeping annoying things off your system.

I have been using AVG by www.grisoft.com for about 2 years now and it has been great. It is also a free download but you need to keep it updated every few days. Only takes a minute to update.

completing Beer_fart´s answer: You´ll need to install an anti-virus (i suggested Avast) and an anti-spyware (i´ll suggested you to install both Spybot and Ad-Aware SE).

trend micro is the best i've used. If you buy Norton you cant ever delete it from your computer. Trend scans daily and blocks pop ups and only costs around 40.

The best i think would be "Norton Anti-Virus". Wal-Mart should have it if they don't try Target :). Hope i helped you today!
