My baby just turned 1 and he will only drink a sip or two of water during the day. He is still breastfed and on solids, but a very picky eater. Any idea if this is ok/healthy for him? You hear so much about hydration, it makes a new mom worry!

Thanks!

If he's breastfeeding still,he probably prefers it to water. He is proabably getting enough fluid through breastmilk and fruit. As you wean him of course he will need more water.

As long as he is breastfeeding regularly he is probibly fine. You can try Kellymom.com for more breastfeeding info. They have information on just about everything to do with breastfeeding. My son is 13months and also still breastfeeds and is on solids but he is a great drinker. I found with him alot of the times he is requesting to breastfeed is because he is thursty and a sippy with water or a bottle with something else in it works instead of breastfeeding him. It really helped cut down on his "nips" at the breast every few minutes. I must confess though, I only tried this because I got pregnant and my nipples were SO sore. I'm sure his hydration is fine as long as he is peeing like normal. Congrats on going for a year! Lots of women dont you are doing a wonderful thing for your son.

Hi,

I have a five year old son and a eighteen month old daughter and she had the same problem when she was one year old she would only drink milk from her bottle and only juice from her cup i put the milk in her sippy cup and she would not drink milk from it at all, i taken her to the Doctor and the Doctor told me that baby's that are sometime teething will not drink and liquids are eat that much at all he said it was perfectly normal at the age they are but to keep offering them thing's and if she gets hungry are thirsty enough she will drink and eat. but my daughter will not drink water at all she hates it but i found something out there that is just as good for them and it is the Gerber toddler juice that is in the baby aisle at the store and it is just like water with not any sugar at all and it is stain proof, i gave that to her and she Love's it. i hope what i have told you might help you.

Mom, your baby will eat and drink what he needs at 12 months. He is probably getting enough water from other sources so he is not intersted in his sippy cup

However this is a concern you should bring to your childs healthcare provider at your next visit.

In the interim I have pasted a link from the National Library of Medicine below. They are authoratative sources on which you can rely.

My daughter is 15 months and still nursing too. She only started drinking more water over the last 6 or 8 weeks, but still not as much as my older kids by her age. You're offering the water so I wouldn't worry. If he's thirsty, he'll drink. You can lead a kid to water....But hey, if you're losing sleep over it, check with his doctor to put your mind at ease. Good luck!

With my son I never gave him juice full-strength (Too much natural sugar). I always diluted it 1/2 & 1/2 with filtered water. It gives them the water they need and the juice that they like.

You keep offering him.Every time you do,you make sure he takes at least sip.It is all about getting him used to it.It takes a hard work but i am sure he'll get used to it if you try hard enough.More he drinks, healthier he will be.
