I read an article today that there is an increasing number of young adults employed in call centers who are experiencing stress and anxiety. Any information to substantiate this?

I worked in telemarketing and in collections for several years. I definitely believe this article is right on.

For one thing you have the boredom aspect. Watching 8 hours go by 30 seconds to 2 minutes at a time can be excruciating, especially if you're intelligent.

For another thing it's the people you have to deal with. I didn't realize how stupid the majority of Americans are until I got into collections. You wouldn't believe how many people I've talked to who can't even handle writing down a phone number. Once I told a lady to get her checkbook and she said hold on and flushed the toilet into the phone. I admit it's funny now but when you're trying to make $$ to buy cool sh*t so you don't despair about the crappy position your life is in it's really depressing.

There is no phrase that strikes fear in the hearts of call center workers more than

GENERAL PUBLIC!

Any job where you have no control over your work cause cause stress and anxiety. Usually in call centers, you don't have a beginning and ending to your work. Nothing is ever "completed." There is no follow through to keep your mind active. The additional item that adds to stress is that people can be so nasty over the phone; they are much braver when they do not have to face you.

I worked in telemarketing for exactly four months. The bosses pushed us telephone minions to be pushy. The potential customers pushed us to leave them alone. My downfall was that I was, get this, polite. I was let go for not being pushy enough.

Call a call center and when someone answers, ask them, Can I help you? But first say, ''Namaste ji, twm ki a hal he?'' That will really freak them out.
