Why are there so many rules now than there were in American prisons back in the 1930's? Prison was prison back then, now it looks like easy as pie. Do you think that if the old ways were to come back, more people will be more careful when it comes to getting in trouble with the law?

I believe if the prisons had not changed then we would have less crime rate today. They got it too easy in prisons today. I've heard over ther years people and teens say " I don't care." "I get more in prison then i do at home or living on the streets. I would love to see them re-open the ROCK again. And same rules apply. I think some would think twice.

GPD818: All American crime figures I have seen have shown that crime has been dropping for the last 5+ years..

I wont comment on the American system as I know little about it, but I will talk about the New Zealand situation a little.

Our prisons have a few luxuries, but you know what, most of it is not at the cost of the tax payer. Those prisoners who have TV's have them paid for by their family. They can get own food from my understanding, but they pay a higher cost and have a limit on what they can spend.

Compared to what the system was, yeah it might be a little soft, but during those times there were high numbers of prisoner escapes, prisoner violence (towards other prisoners and prison staff), destruction of prison property (which the taxpayer DID pay for) and god knows what else.

And you know what, it still had no effect on recidivist rates.

At least this way it makes the prison a safer and mostly trouble-free environment.

And remember they are locked up for most the time. It may not be totally spartan but neither is it a 5 star hotel.

Yes!!

Prison today is way to cushy for the maggot inmates that practically steal our tax money. Those rat-bastard inmates have got way to many priveleges that the everyday, honest-living, hardworking, average Joe cannot afford to have........and they get it for free. I say if you do something bad enough to go to jail you should be put in a cell and allowed only to read educational materials or sit there and think about what you did that put you in that position. That is just me and that may be harsh, but giving these maggots magazines and television and all the other sorts is ridiculous as well as a slap in the face of the justice system. The system is already flawed in itself and here we are letting the bad guys live like kings. Bring back public floggings and public hangings and I can almost guarantee that crime will drop.

I have no clue what a prisoner lives like in prison, however, based on stuff you see on TV or read in articles, I'd have to say they do have it "better" than years ago, maybe too good in some prisons, but again, I read that some prisons are "nice" and some are "brutal", so who knows, maybe they need across the board rules?

Dude, can you say Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib? The US human rights record for treatment of prisoners is in shambles.
