It is a male thing. Almost akin to making a claim on a woman, and sending out a message to the other men in the room that the woman is off limits. It sucks, but it is the only thing I can think of that makes sense. And it does not necessarily mean that he wants to be in a relationship with you, either, just putting it out there that "this is mine, back off".

It might mean that he's too scared or shy to put his arms around her or hands on her waist or hips. It just depends on how close the girl wants to get. Usually it's the girl that puts her arms around the guys neck or hands on his shoulders. As long as he's not moving like he's a stick figure I guess it's ok. It might not have anything to do with the girl. Just the guy not knowing what to do with his hands or first time going to a dance.

To me it would mean either he is interested and wants to be a gentleman or he is just being polite. Maybe he didn't really know how to dance so he was trying to concentrate on moving instead of on the pretty girl he was with. That can be distracting.

I saw a show once on body language, and they said it meant proprietorship. It's someone's way of letting other's know(w/o saying a word) "this is mine" in order to keep others at a distance. Don't know if it's true, but that's what was said on the tv show.

It might have been an awkward way of telling other boys that you were HIS girl, stay away. Or maybe he just wanted to touch you.
