In Vedic culture tilaka, also spelled tilak, is a mark worn on the forehead and other parts of the body. It is commonly seen between the parting of the hair on married women, and on the forehead on Hindu priests and devotee's.
It may be made with sandalwood paste, ashes, or clay from a holy river such as the Ganges or Yamuna.
Saivites (Devotee's of Lord Siva) typically use ashes and draw their tilaks as three horizontal lines (tripundra).
Vaishnavites(Devotee's of Lord Krishna) apply clay (preferably from holy rivers) or sandalwood paste. They apply the material in two vertical lines, which may be connected at the bottom, forming either a simple U shape or a form said to be like a tulasi leaf. Their tilak is called the urdhva-pundra.
Shaktas use kumkuma, or powdered red turmeric. They draw one vertical line or dot.
The application of tilak is part of the Yoga process, for example in Vaishnava culture, a devotee of Lord Krishna will apply tilak on twelve parts of the upper body daily, whilst reciting mantra's that glorify twelve prime incarnations or avatars of Vishnu, this process is not only purifying but also signifies that the material body belongs to God and is engaged in God's service.

1.The 3 horizontal lines on the forehead indicate the "lines of Wisdom''(they are ruled more by their head/reason)
2.The U shape in between the eyebrows symbolise ''Deep Devotion''(they are ruled more by their heart/emotion)
3.The round/elongated bindi at the root of the nose(in between the eyebrows)is symbolic of the 3rd eye of the yogi(ajna chakra)
Real practitioners of the above have these lines formed naturally in their skin as wrinkles(lines of wisdom....) Noticed?
Have you observed old people having them naturally as depressions of skin, some have both of them .
But the 3rd one is the inner vision of the inner eye which is invisible.
All these are symbolic reminders of spiritual facts of life .Cannot be gained by just physical drawing of Tilaks.Have to be experienced in real life,so that they are drawn by nature permanently on your forehead manifesting your true inner qualities of Spirituality.
