For some reason i have this thing for crossing my legs. I do it all the time. I pass in volleyball with my legs crossed as much as possible (no wonder i suck). I would always cross my ankles in band although my teacher said it made people play worse. I obviously cross my legs pretty much whenever i can sitting down. I even cross my ankles when i am driving. Is there any psychological or whatever basis for this?

I do almost the same thing. I can't help it. I will keep checking back on your question and see if anyone has any insight on this.

I would say there may ( and may not) be a good chance the one leg is a bit longer then the other. I had this problem when I was young and had to have one elevated shoe to help out. Ask the doctor

The crossing of the legs is learned early in life to compensate and pretty much becomes habit.

I must add it can be in the spine too as that will also make the legs uneven due to not being able to stand straight.

I think you just formed a habit. You should be careful though, because crossing your legs can cause bad circulation in your legs and that might be a problem later on. Try to stop crossing your legs so much and break the habit. It will be difficult.. but you can do it.

Surely, with all the other indications you reveal in your statement, you can recognize what this represents.. All you have to do is recall what you felt before crossing them.

Crossing of the extremities is body language indicating a defensive position... in your case, caused by insecurities. Your instructor was right.. she/he recognized you were less sure of yourself when crossing those extremities.. by uncrossing, you would have had a bit more confidence and played much better.

If this really bothers you then you may want to ask a doctor. There may be an orthopedic reason that makes you more comfortable when you sit if your legs are crossed.

If it feels more comfortable, why listen to others. If this is your worst psychological habit, you are the sanest person on the planet.

It's called getting physically comfortable in the chair that you are sitting in.

maybe you're just comfortable that way. Unless your uncomfortable with it when you do it... if that's the case I'd see a professional.
