i've been searching all night about the gnat-litter box problem. i just got my cat. he is very clean, the house is very clean, the litter box is very clean, i scoop the urine and poop every day. i have a box with a trap door -- big box for him. unfortunately, when i uncover the box it is swarming with gnats - what the heck is going on. i never had this problem before and i am a "cat person". the only difference is that i lived in cold weather state and now i live in a warm weather state. the gnats are EVERY WHERE in my home. i have to bomb my home, but why would this be. i use tidy cats for small spaces. is it perhaps the litter? can you suggest a litter? i'll try anything. it is not a cleanliness issue. i know i know what you are thinking -- yeah right. No, it is freaky.

I know exactly what you mean. Trust me, it is not you. I took my cat to the vet on Thursday and our vet said that this is the worst season so far for fleas and gnats. It is because the weather is so warm. He gave me some flea and gnat killer that you can use inside and it is safe for pets. I cleaned all day today and they are gone. Go to your local vet and they will tell you what to get. They said that the stuff sold in stores does not work. You should get your yard sprayed. Before I sprayed, the gnats and fleas were swarming my windows. I thought I was in some scary movie and boy do those suckers bite. I don't know where you live but if you live in the North, don't worry about it. It will be a waste of money. We are supposed to get cold weather and those little shits can't survive in the cold. Thankfully

Oh and if you get a large cup and fill it with vinegar, you will be surprised at how they will swarm into the cup and drown. Put it in troubled areas.

I agree with Katrina, it's a very hard problem to break once they get in. They lay eggs everywhere and once they are in, it's hard to get them out again. I can only say that perhaps they came in the house in the litter. I would try bombing the house as you've mentioned and if they come back again - perhaps try bathing the cat and bleaching the litter box. Throw out the bag of litter you have and purchase a new one. I don't think it is that particular brand, but perhaps that bag itself. When you bleach the litter box, be sure and rinse it very well and let it air dry before using it again for the cat. Hope that helps. Good luck. And it really isn't a cleanliness issue, it can happen in the cleanest of homes.

No, I totally believe you. I am also a clean freak, but occasionally get attacked by swarms of gnats in various places. I have a few now, just not a huge infestation....and I haven't found any in a litter box yet (thank God). The worst was when we lived in our old apartment....I think a fly laid eggs in my guinea pig's cage, then they hatched and were *everywhere*. I killed the majority, cleaned the cage really well....within a few weeks, I had another swarm. I never did figure it out.

I really don't know what to tell you other than it happens. Gnats are so small, they can sometimes get in through screens....and once they're in, it's damn near impossible to get them back out.

Hmm, I've never heard of this either. But, I use Fresh Step Multiple Cat Strength litter. I wouldn't think it would be the type of litter though. I'm just taking a guess, but maybe that gnats are coming from something else but they are attracted to the litter box since it has poo and pee in there. Again, I'm only guessing.
