He was doing God's will, destroying the enemies of Israel, all while dodging the homicial attempts of King Saul, who was SUPPOSED to be doing all the killing. If you read 1 Kings the right way, it's quite entertaining to read how David could outmaneuver Saul, and the Phillistines over and over. Of course he wasn't king yet then. After that, he was just securing the homeland, making the place safe for theocracy.

Who said he was kind? That's a first.David was a rugged ,hot tempered red headed warrior.Who made tons of mistakes but his heart was always to please God.Read his Psalms what a great man.
He made mistakes in who he married,how he raised his kids,having Uriah killed (for which he paid dearly,the rest of his life,from losing his baby to his son Absalom's rebellion,to the rape of a daughter by her brother amd Absalom killing him.I mean you name it,David paid for it,but he always loved God and God took that into consideration.

Although David did actually exist (confirmed by archaeology), he was not the great warrior king of the Bible. He was just a chieftan of a local tribe of po dunk beduine.
