i put frontline on my dogs a few hours ago and they were fine but within the past hour 2 of them have been acting a little crazy like licking the couch and biting at the air and running around and such. and it seems like all the fleas have migrated to their heads...is this normal?

I've never had that problem with frontline before but if the fleas are moving around on the dogs, it's sound normal to me. That's how dogs with act if the feel like some thing is moving on them. The fleas must have been pretty bad.

Some dogs don't like the smell of Frontline (or any flea preventative) so will react to it.Also the fleas migrating is normal and they will alldie as will their eggs. Do NOT give a bath of any kind within 24-48 hours before applying Frontline nor within 48 hours after applying Frontline.
I want to ask was the flea product the "real" Frontline that you bought from a vet or was it an OTC product?

Sometimes when the fleas are in the "dying" stage, they will run about the dog as they are expiring. Your Frontline is probably working fine. Some animals react if they have a large amount of fleas running crazy on them, but it will pass. Probably next month when you reapply you wont see that reaction because there wont be live fleas. Also a precaution about using Revolution, it IS an excellent product that does it all, but because it also has heartworm preventative you MUST make sure your dog is either already on heartworm preventative, or have it tested BEFORE you use Revolution. (You can start young pups on Revolution without testing first) If you were to use a heartworm preventative on a dog that already has heartworms it could cause serious side effects. It is no problem to cats though, and works very well on them also. :)

Did you use the appropriate amount for the size dog? And where on the dog did you put the Frontline? You CAN OD an animal if you accidentally put a 70# dose on a 15# dog. And some dogs are more sensitive to chemicals. One dog at our shelter wound up with nerve damage from Revolution and still has ongoing problems.

Some nutty behavior is acceptable after flea treatment, like the running around, but if they start trembling, become uncoordinated or disoriented, or act as if they are having seizures, wash them immediately with dishwashing liquid and water, and get as much of that stuff off as possible.

I have to agree with the others regarding Revolution. Talk to your vet first before using it and make sure your animal's current medication won't cause problems with it.

Good luck to you.

This is normal for topical flea repellents, such as Frontline.

With others, such as Revolution, which I recommend to everyone, they are internally digested into the bloodstream, and then the dog doesn't react like that.

Topicals often burn, itch, the fleas run around and bite while they die. The poor dogs are having a hard time.

Revolution is about $17 a month...worth every cent. It kills the fleas, live larvae, eggs, life cycle, repels mostquitos, ticks, lice and earmites as well as cures mange.

Revolution also kills roundworms and ascarids. It is thought it might kill tapeworms, but it's not definitive.

We use it with all our animals.

Good luck!

you should first bathe them in dawn dishing liquid, this will kill all fleas instanly on contact better than ANY product on the market.you can also spray your carpets with this in light dilutions.
Sound crazy but, dawn has always been used as a cleaning agent for birds and etc..that have been trapped in oil spills.it cleans throughly without side effects or damage.as a matter of fact,it reverses damage done to the animal, and can used over and over even several times a day.we use on our animals and they stay flea free.

did you put on frontline after they already had fleas? i think it's supposed to be preventative, not a cure if they're already there. if they have fleas, they would need a bath with a shampoo that would kill the fleas, then frontline for the future.

this is normal, as it can take up to 24 hours for the frontline to take full effect. you can also try washing your carpet, bedding, walls, anything you can around your home to try and wash fleas out of where they like to live and kill them.

I think if they had fleas, it's the fleas moving around on the dogs' backs. The fleas may live, but they will be weak and be infertile and die. If the dogs aren't ok tomorrow, ask a vet.

ps Revolution makes my dog vomit. Dunno why, but I don't use it anymore.
