I do use hand lotion and it isn't caused from paper cuts. My hands aren't dry but they crack at the tip-corner of my nails.

Please go and see the Doc. about this and they will prescribe a lotion that really helps. My daughter has this and they told her it was her nerves and it could be linked to smoking as well. If you smoke this would be a good reason to stop.

Edit update: You are describing the very thing my daughter has and no, over the counter lotions will not help. Her pain use to bring tears to my eyes so I understand. Please see the Doc. and he/she might turn you over to a dermatologist

If you do a lot of hand washing, dishes and general cleaning where your hands get wet, cracking is usually caused by the chemicals you are using. My fingers get hot, itchy spots and cracks from harsh chemicals or soaps. I wash my hands a great deal, as I work with children. I have found that creams help a little but do not prevent the cracking, etc. I did find a product that does not do that, even if I am scrubbing all day. The company name is Melalucca (another name for Tea Tree Oil). I think that is how it is spelled. It is simple to order their products. I am switching over to all of their cleaners. They do a superior job. Go on line and I am sure you will find a link. I helped a friend move and cleaned her kitchen from top to bottom using their strongest cleaner for removing grease and built up dirt and it did not bother my hands at all. Something else you may want to look into is Omega 3 fatty acids. You get it from fish but you can also get it from flax seed oil, evening primrose oil, and from other plant oils. I take some vitamins called "Alive" by Nature's Way and it has Omega 3's in it and my skin is so soft and it heals quicker when I use anything harsh. You may want to look into these or other products to help you both inside and out. You could try using Virgin Olive Oil that is cold pressed and organic in your foods and even on your hands before bed. It isn't enough for me but it does help the cracks to go away a little more quickly. If you have a tendency to bruise easiy, you may not be able to take the herbal sources as it can cause some people to bruise but there are other sources of Omega 3 and there is always the simple fix of eating salmon twice a week or taking the fis oils in capsules if you are not a fish eater. But make sure you read up on all the options and talk to your doctor if you have any other health issues or are taking any medications that might not work as well when combined with certain foods, herbs or oils.

severe dryness can cause your skin to split open, crack and bleed.

try using soap with moisturizer in it (dove works great)

also start using a hand lotion-jergens makes a great one for severe dry skin called ultra healing. or Johnson's also has a great one i use at work (i'm a nurse in trauma icu-imagine how many times i have to wash my hands in a 12 hour shift!!) it's called softcream extra care healing cream-it lasts through several handwashings and keep my hands soft-you can find it at any grocery or drugstore.

use the lotion several times a day and after you wash your hands

to treat the cuts-wash them well with warm water and mild soap (dove or ivory). apply a thin layer of neosporin and cover them with bandaids.

Oh I have the same problem. The best thing that I do is that when I think I'm about to or am biting my nails, quickly get my hands away from my mouth. If you notice a few days later that your nails are getting longer and you have an urge to go for it and bite your nails, Fight the urge! Good luck, girlie! Hope I helped!! ♥♥
