It`s fully legal to toot around America with an out of US license plate but have your registration and insurance and drivers license with you in case you get pulled over, Also before you leave get a passport you will need it at the border in Detroit. the trip is about 28 hrs have fun and make some stops along the way like the drag racing hall of fame in N. Florida and the Alligator farms are Cool also. Don`t spend the night in Detroit, Ohio or Georgia. you will regret it trust me.

Just go to Map Quest and ask for a map. You may need two, one for Canada and one for the USA.

That's a long drive. I'm not sure if any shortcut will take a large proportion off of your total trip.
