I occasionally give my cat canned cat food once a week however I needed room in my refrigerator so I gave him a who can in a two day period bc I needed to make room in my fridge. Ever since then (this was 3 days ago) he has been expecting me to feed him canned cat food and he won't touch his dry cat food! I come home from work at night and he meows and meows and hasn't eaten a bite of his reg. cat food I filled up before work! Then in the middle of the night, he wakes me up by biting my leg thinking I'm going to get up and feed him canned food! I just don't have the money to feed him canned food everyday. What should I do?

Why would I get rid of him? If you had a kid would you get rid of it when a problem arouse?

Canned food is nearly always preferred by cats and dogs! I think you should stick to your guns as dried food is so much better for them. Perhaps mix catfood in with dried food and gradually decrease this. A good idea sometimes is to add a small amount of gravy to dried food so it still gets that Mmmm factor. I have six cats and two dogs and am still mixing a little wet food to dry. Good luck!

I'm all for feeding your cat what it likes provided it's good quality food. Unless he is on dry food for a reason (like a prescription diet) what's the harm in giving him a little bit of wet food & a little bit of dry food? If he's anything like my cat he'll eat the wet food first & then go back for the dry food later. Both have advantages to being in the diet - dry food for cleaning the teeth & providing fibre & less stanky tidier poop, wet food for providing water & oils in the case of tuna/sardines. I actually feed my cats human tinned fish & their coats are lovely - it's also better quality than Fancy Feast or other junk like that. They also get dried food because one of my boys has the crystals so they get a little of that too. With the biting you in the middle of the night - you're going to have to keep pretending you're asleep til he gives up on that idea. Mine used to like to try to get me up at 5am, NOT going to happen. It may take a while & it may hurt a little but do not give in even once otherwise that sets the trend.

Your first problem is that you were only feeding him wet food once a week. A male cat's diet should be at LEAST 50% wet food. Males are very prone to crystals in their bladder. Dehydration can cause crystals to form, and they can create a fatal blockage in the urinary tract.

There are so many advantages with soft food as far as feline health. You really should read up on it:

http://www.catinfo.org

After reading this, I switched both of my cats from hard Science Crap to two meals of high-quality soft food a day. (And by high-quality, I mean made with real meat and no corn...corn makes cats fat and has absolutely no nutritional value.) Since switching them, I've noticed a MAJOR change in their overall appearances and temperments. Their coats are softer and shinier, their eyes are clearer and brighter, they're more active, and my male, who was getting a bit tubby free-grazing on dry Science Crap, is losing weight. They also aren't deydrated anymore. Dry food diets are a concern because the majority of cats on them are dehydrated. This was evident in my cats only after I switched them to soft.....because they are no longer searching out water as if their lives depend on it.

Seriously, one can of food a day, split into two meals. The most expensive I've bought so far has been Wellness canned food....it's 99 cents a can. You can't afford a dollar a day to feed your cat?

My cat did a similar, on off loose pungent stools with sparkling pink blood. darkish/black stools is an illustration of a situation further up. sparkling blood is tremendous colon or rectal and regularly a lot less severe. My cat is likewise a pig and has continuously eaten much-he by no skill seems finished. With my cat me and my vet tried, huge worming (did not help)' antibiotics for gut (did not artwork), clay to bind pollution (did not artwork), stool pattern despatched and confirmed no longer some thing. tender nutrients develop into tried and all of it went away, that's extreme priced yet more competitively priced than vets, through the years we've managed to slowly introduce more competitively priced nutrients and he eats that for all time now. the better extreme priced food market manufacturers did not trust him yet more competitively priced ones did unusually. tender nutrients will be delivered on information superhighway for less extreme priced than in vets/shops, we kept a large number of money ordering off information superhighway

Mix a little of the canned food with the dry. Each day put less and less canned into the mix. Finally just stir the dry with a spoon used in the canned. He will be weaned off the canned.
Good luck!

You could try mixing some dry food with some of his soft food, more soft food than hard food. Then gradually start decreasing the amount of soft food and increase the dry food. I would do this slowly though. I wouldn't have him totally on dry food by like three days from now. This should work, but like I said I would do it gradually. Good luck! I had to do this with my kittens!

You'll have to stay firm. I know it's hard because i kinda spoiled my cats and dog when it comes to treats and soft food. I'm still trying to slowly reduce their soft food intake (the meowing and the puppy dog eyes can really get to you!!!) because my older cat is now too heavy, and my dog is a bit on the chunky side now as well.

cat food is not that expensive...buy a can and if you only give the cat wet food say in the morning ,the can could last 2-3 days...otherwise leave plenty of dried and water as well.......

I just give my kitties wet food as a treat. I used to give them one can a night for the two of them to split, but your right, its pricy. Mine have pretty much gotten used to the fact that they aren't gonna have it all the time, but when I am in the kitchen and opening a can, believe me they are right under my feet! Don't worry, your kitty will get over his obsession.
