Why is it that it is never taught in school to get people to think for themselves? Blame teaching to a test or what have you, but there are no excuses to not guide people to think for themselves. Why is it that the subject of money aka Personal Finance is never taught to kids or even college students? Sure, say that these things are a parents responsibility. Parents will come up with all kinds of excuses. Parents continually rely on the system to teach their kids and fail to teach their kids the values they need. After all, we do have a Dept of Education who is supposed to make our system work, but its quite obvious that nothing is being done to improve things(because its a govt job and its all about the money) So, with all of this being said, what in your opinions is the underlying causes to our failures in our public education system?

I think, deep down inside, people just don't care that much. It sounds awful, but if people cared, the schools would be fully funded with teachers making a lot more than they are now. I'm not blaming individuals, but I think our society as a whole just does not value education. After all, "ivory tower elitist" is a phrase that's been thrown around a lot lately. We also allow our schools to be used as battle grounds for every politician that wants to. If people as a whole had paid attention, No Child Left Behind would never had made it through Congress, for example. It sounds good, though, so not too many people made a fuss. In my opinion, there's definitely a dumbing down of America.

What you see are the shortcomings. You do not see the success. Although no humans could read or write 10,000 years ago most of us learn to do that and math which the Romans could not do. This is with the same genetic make up which kept humans alive with stone age tools for hundreds of thousands of years. It is the adaptability of humans which enables them to do close hand work with symbols for hours when their ancestors foraged for food during their waking hours.

The social context has changed remarkably in only a few generations. Education is not considered at all in the United States Constitution. Once you can read, type and think your education is your own responsibility.

Well, you've gotten my answer already: the majority of children (public school) don't seem to have a background that valued or promoted interest in learning. If students in general were eager to know new things, asked questions, and actively participated in their learning experience, a teacher would have to be pretty dim to fail to educate her class. Also, the lack of $funding$. In my area, the teachers love their profession and are dedicated to it. They use their own money to provide all sorts of materials for their classes, including financing a hefty portion of their field trips. More and more I'm seeing teachers soliciting contributions from the student's family. It's a citizens right to be educated, and his/her responsibility to help pay for it as well.

-I believe it has a lot to do with the death of shame. If you fail, it's OK, as long as you did your best. That's the wrong ideology, as many think that just by showing up, they are doing their best. I hasten to bring television intot he equation but if you have ever seen that awful American Idol show- all of these teenagers get on there and sing their hearts out, and then insist that they are talented and can sing even when the professionals tell them otherwise.
Many kids first experience with discipline is the back of a squad car.
The schools are culture starved and just huge bureaucracies
That's a start.

Lack of discipline and lack of parental concern about the behavior of their children in class. I sat through three of my daughter's sixth grade classes and was appalled by the behavior.

The teachers can't do anything about it. Some of the 6th graders I saw should have had a weeks suspension for their actions.
