I am one who believes no martial art is ultimately better than another, some might seem more practical in a real fight. But each has there own advantages and disadvantages, and were created to deal with a particular threat. Any martial arts can have SOME practicality in a real life self defense situation.

Capoeria being a dance. Only kinda true. It is a martial art DISGUISED as dance because African slaves in Brazil were not allowed to learn how to defend themselves. So in its own right its a brilliant martial art to allow the opressed be able to defend themselves.

That being said you are taught the ginga which all the attacks and denfense comes from. Now in real life being attacked, are you going to do the back and forth movement? are you going to do the more acrobatics moves like flips, handstands, etc?...Hell no...unless you want to get laughed at or kicked in the head as you are doing an au de cabeça. Does this mean capoeira is useless? No I think what you get out of capoeira can be very useful. Capoeira moves gives you great endurance and flexiblity and balance. Also playing capoeira in a roda you learn trickery you can really learn how to not telegraph your attacks and on the other hand you lean how to read other people to get a feel on how they are going to be attacking you. But this is just the principles behind capoeira, the actual attacks may need to be modified to fit your situation and capoeira doesn't teach to disable by any means necessary, and they don't really teach you any good hand striking.

Kickboxing can be used for self defense. It is practiced more as a sport so quickly 100% disabling your attacker by any means once again isn't really taught. But it can definitely be used in self defense sitiuations too. I especially like Muay Thai kickboxing since you can use elbow and knee strikes and some clinches. Despite what the person above me said thai boxing is NOT only kicks you train punching. Kickboxing is BOXING where you are also allowed to kick too. You get from kickboxing once again endurance the ability to read an attacker and strong and quick attacks. And they teach to attack within reason such as you dont really learn to kick above the waist because trying to kick to the head is going to telegraph the act too much and if the person defends you are put in a dangerous situtation to get back into another attacking position.

Ultimately it depends on the person and not the style. Will a person who knows karate always beat someone who knows taekwondo? Nope, not always, depends on the person, depends on the amount of effort put in ect...And your ability to use what you know to ADAPT to the threat you are in.

You have to look at all aspects of a self-denfense situation. One on one maybe all you need to do its a swift kick in the groin. But what if you have multiple attackers? What if they have a gun or a knife? What if they take you to the ground?

Mixed Martial arts is a great route to go for self-defense. Especially Muay Thai and Brazilian Jujitsu thats why so many Pride and Ultimate Fighters are trained in these. Thai you learn great striking abilities, bjj if a fight goes to the ground(which most do)you know how to defend yourself against holds.

Krav Maga is a great one for self-defense also you use basic instincts to defend yourself and anything goes to keep you safe including eye gouges, groin kicking etc...They also teach to defend against an armed attack and multiple attackers.

Now most people would tell you(out of the two) to pick kickboxing and I'd advise you to start there too, but like I said maybe you would just naturally be better at capoeira than kickboxing. And capoeira does have its benefits if you know how to apply em.

Defiinitely kickboxing. Kickboxing is more objective when it is about fighting and defending yourself. Capoeira is a skills game that can be applied as a martial art. However it takes a long time just to be able to dominate those techniques.

There are many self-defense techniques. 1.) TAKE JUDO/AIKIDO/KARATE/TAEKWONDO/MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES. All are good self-defence classes. 2.) BE PREPARED. You never know when they will attack. When you're travelling alone, make sure you have some sort of weapon. A key in between your middle and ring finger, a magazine folded into thin lengthwise strips then folded in half, anything can become a weapon. 3.)DON'T PANIC. The more you panic when you're attacked, the more you can't think. Take a deep breath and calmly try to think of a way out. 4.)PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING IN THE FIRST PLACE. Most of us never really pay close attention to the people around us. Especially when you're walking/travelling alone, casually try to see which people could be potential attackers. Avoid the ones you suspect, it's better to be safe than sorry. If the person has a gun and is robbing youand he isn't afraid to use it, give him what he wants, especially if you aren't a trained self-defence expert. If, however, you want to risk it, try these steps: 1. When he's pointing the gun at your back, determine what his gun hand is(if he's left- or right handed). 2. Calmly but quickly step out of his gun's target area by turning around in such a way that he wont't be able to use it on you for a few seconds.(turn outside, not inside, don't turn in such a way that you're facing him if you turn). 3. In those precious seconds, do disabling techniques on him/her(ex:punch upward to hit chin, poke eye, karate chop neck or nose, etc) and GET THE GUN AWAY FROM HIM/HER. Threaten him with it if you have to.

Capoeira for self defense? Is this a joke? It is dancing!

You never plant your body to get any power behind any of those attacks to fight an attacker off. But maybe if you are being attacked and you start brazilian breakdancing, maybe the attacker will give you a dollar and then leave.

I think the best question would be "What is more worthless for self defense? Capoeira, Wushu, or using ESP to strike down your opponent."

There is a super low chance you will ever get attacked and need to use anything like a martial art. Stay out of troubleand don't go looking for trouble. The best to take is Western Boxing and jiu jitsu. I don't like kick boxing or MuayThai because once you miss that kick, you are easier to knock down and out goes that martial art when you are down. You need a combo of a few martial arts

Your best self-defense starts with your mind and how you carry yourself. If you look like a victim, people will try to use that against you, now, that doesn't mean you should go around acting like a lion, either. I don't know much about Capoeira, there's a little of it one of my work-out videos, it's fun, but I don't know how practical it is....But, like I said, I don't know much about it either. I take Tae Kwon Do, I've taken lessons for 3 years. I think the best form of self-defense is one where you are taught by knowledgeable people, but also, you have to use it, you've got to be taught by people who will hit you, and show you the consequences of being caught off-guard. I suggest you check out a few places, and then go and watch a few classes...not demo's, but real classes. Notice how the students get alone, how the teachers treat them, and what kind of sparring they engage in. There are a lot of people out there teaching, who shouldn't be, and their sloppiness can get you killed. Check these people out, and then make sure that they have credentials.
